Welcome!

As a special education teacher I often feel pulled in every direction.  To guide me
through the days and to keep parents and students informed, I have created this
website.  Within, you will find information pertaining to how I run my classroom, to
helpful links for students, parents, and colleagues.  I have also added links to some
of the most recent research taking place in the field of special education.

If you have any questions or have problems with any of the links contained in this
website please contact me.

World History ~ October 2011

After a review of how history is recorded, students have now moved forward to important leaders in history and the lands in which they lived.  At the beginning of October, students will be learning about Alexander the Great as we move forward through the month students will learn about important cultures such as Rome and the Roman Empire.  Students will also be learning about the Growth of Christianity.

Fundamental Skills - October 2011

The first two weeks in October, your child will be working on learning-practicing memory techniques.  The last two weeks of October, students will be learning-practicing listening strategies. Please reinforce these concepts and skills at home.

Each Monday - your child is being given a copy of their present grades and school notes.  Please review these with your child and help reinforce good study and homework habits.

Monday's will also be a time for me to introduce new strategies or to work on other classroom projects. There is a good chance that your student will not be able to complete their homework in my class that day so please check up with them to make sure they complete this work at home.

We started the school year reviewing study strategies, time management and keeping up with homework assignments. We are continuing through our course on Anger Management. Please help your child by discussing anger issues and supporting their homework assignments.

Life skills English ~ October 2011

Each day, students work independently at their reading level using either the Reading Skills for Life curriculum or the Edmark reading program.  This involves grammar rules, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and predictions.  Areas of difficulty are reviewed individually or as a class depending on the need of the student(s).

We are finishing up our unit on reading newspapers and will be starting a unit on Building Character.

Life Skills Citizenship ~ October 2011

This months newspaper will be about individuality - students will be writing about things that they like to do and sharing their thoughts with their classmates. Students are also learning about Va and how the Civil War changed Virginia history.  Students will use their new knowledge to complete a scavenger hunt on their upcoming fieldtip to Appomattox.

We have practiced being could citizens by helping the Key Club with recycling and the Athletic department by washing towels. We will continue to support our school and town throughout the coming school year.

Science Skills/Biology ~ October 2011

We have been learning about the characteristics of living vs. non-living.  Students have gone outdoors on fieldtrips to identify the number of living organisms we found vs. how many nonliving.  Students are working on classifying organisms.

Life Skills Science ~ October 2011

After completing our unit on Fall; which will include storm safety, students will begin a new unit on personal safety and wellness. As fall is often a time for colds and flus, students will be learning about how germs are shared and what we can do to protect ourselves from them.
